Chapter 19
âWell? How did it go?â Tally threw her arms around him and gave him the now customary peck on the cheek.
Tom flopped down on a kitchen chair.
âTell me! Tell me!â
He looked dazed. âI got the job.â
âYes! Well done! Gosh! That means youâre a writer. Wow!â
âNot yet it doesnât. Not until I write something.â
âBut what did they say? Did you show them what you could do? What did they think of it?â
âThey chatted about what I did, asked why I wanted the job, looked at what Iâd written â briefly â then said theyâd give me three monthsâ trialâ
âWow! And what about the money?â
Tom frowned. âNone of your business.â
âOh, Dad! Is it OK? Can we live on it?â
He was touched by her concern. âSweetheart, I donât think it will keep you in the manner to which youâve become accustomed, but by the time the sale of the restaurant goes through and what with insurance policies and stuff . . .â he swallowed hard â. . . weâll be OK. And it wonât take up too much time so I think Iâll be able to start writing something a bit bigger.â
âThe novel?â
âMaybe.â
âGreat! Come on, then.â She got up and walked across the kitchen.
âWhat?â
Time for a celebration.â
âOh, Tal, I donât think â â
âNo buts. We need things to celebrate, you and me, and this is our first step.â She smiled ruefully.
He took the hint. âGo on, then.â
She opened the fridge and took out a bottle of Laurent Perrier.
âWhere did that come from?â
âNever you mind.â
âWhat would I do without you?â
âYouâd have more money for a start.â
âAh. Did I pay for that?â
Tally nodded.
âI see what you mean. Come on.â He opened the bottle with a well-practised twist and poured the fizz into the two flutes Tally passed him. He handed one to her, took one for himself and looked her in the eye. âHereâs to us, my love.â
âHereâs to us.â She chinked her glass against his. âAnd the future.â
As the bubbles hit the back of his throat he felt a sense of relief at the dayâs events. He could think of no other person with whom he would rather celebrate. Except one.
Tally wrinkled her nose and spluttered as the champagne went down the wrong way. He patted her on the back. âYouâre not used to it.â
âNo, but if you do well with your writing I could get used to it.â
âCheeky monkey! Develop a taste for this and youâll need a richer man than I am to look after you.â
He wondered why her face had taken on a glazed expression. She did not tell him that two hours earlier she had rung Alex Blane-Pfitzer. She had worried over it for days, but finally something inside her snapped. She could not go on like this â longing to travel in one emotional direction with Alex but being pulled in quite another by her concern for her father. It was better that she end it . . . wasnât it? For a while anyway. Then at least she could get her head round things.
